Is a copper water bottle good for health

Are you looking to cut down your use of plastic water bottles and wanting to invest in a reusable water bottle? Why not invest in one that could also improve your immune system. Yes, you read that right.

According to Ayurveda, a holistic system of medicine which was origniated in India more than 3,000 years ago, drinking copper water helps balance the 3 humors or doshas, known as vata, kapha, and pitta which are believed to be responsible towards ones's physiological, mental, and emotional health.

Studies have also shown that copper water has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which could:

  • Aid digestion
  • Improve joint health
  • Thyroid health
  • Heal wounds
  • Delay ageing
  • Reduce stress

What is copper water and is it safe?

Copper water is made by storing water in a copper bottle or vessel over a period of 6 - 16 hours allowing the copper ions to infuse into the water. Some even let it sit for 24 hours or 48 hours. You can drink this water as soon as you wake up. The World Health Organization (WHO) has concluded that it is safe to consume up to 2mg of copper per litre. According to this study if a litre of water is left in a copper bottle for 16 hours, it contains 0.016 mg of copper. This is 1/20th of suggested dose issued by the World Health Organization.

Can you keep copper bottles in fridge

You can keep your copper water bottle in the fridge but according to Ayurveda, it is advisable to drink water at room temperature, this is because the cold could lead to digestive issues whereby drinking water at room temperature breaks down the food in your stomach and aids the digestive system.

How to clean copper bottles

Before you use your copper water bottle it is best to rinse your bottle by squeezing half a lemon into the bottle, 1 tablespoon of salt and 1/2 cup water, close the lid and shake it and then rinse it out with plain water. Once you've rinsed it out you can then go ahead and fill it with water.

When copper is exposed to air it oxidizes and causes your the copper to tarnish and therefore it is best to clean your water bottle every three months. To remove the tarnish cut 2 lemons in half, sprinkle some slat on the lemon halves, rub over the tarnished areas and then rinse it off.
