What are crystals used for?

Belief in the therapeutic power of crystals goes back to ancient philosophies as found in some of the oldest meditative religions like Buddhism and Hinduism. The interest in crystals has continued to this day, thanks in no small part to their mesmerising beauty. Their properties of colour, shape and texture make them endlessly fascinating, along with the fact that some have been formed over thousands of years in the earth. Their physical properties also make them of great practical use in watches, televisions, mobile phones and satellites.

In recent years, the popularity in crystals has seen a large increase. Many people find them to be of great comfort both spiritually and mentally. The idea behind this belief is that certain crystals are thought to imcrease the amount of good energy which flows through the mind and body, thus allowing for a more peaceful and happy existence. This practice is connected to the power of the mind, with the crystals serving to focus and enhance the healing power that each and every person has in their own mind and body.

How to choose crystals?

As intuition is suggested to be one of the main things which your choice will come down to, it is important to see how you feel when in front of a wide collection. If you are in a physical shop, then the feel of one crystal might somehow speak to you. If you are shopping online, then the colour or shape of a crystal might stand out ahead of the rest.

Again, if you are in a shop such as our very own, you may want to hold a crystal in your hand and take note of the experience, sensing what kind of feeling it gives you in that moment. You can then go with the crystal which seems most effectively to draw from you the feeling which you most want to harness. In this case, it is a question of letting your mind and body guide you.

If, however, you are shopping online, you might like to start with the feeling you want to enhance or harness. This might be the feeling of energised inspiration. Alternatively, you might be looking to enhance your feelings of tranquility. Reading up on the healing properties which it is thought that certain crystals provide will help you locate the crystal which will best enable you to go on your own chosen spiritual journey.

Along the way in this research, you will begin to learn about the seven chakras and how each crystal fits into this spiritual system. The seven chakras are the Crown Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Sola Plexus, Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra, Third-eye Chakra and Root Chakra.

How to program crystals?

The idea of programming a crystal is to do with aligning these stones with your own goals. As crystals are said to help positive energy flow into you, it is important that they are in sync with your own long term goals. Programming is therefore important if you are looking to build a long term relationship with your crystal and if you would like to head in a specific direction towards a certain goal in the future.

The process for programming crystals therefore involves getting into a meditative state, with deep breaths and perhaps with the use of calming ambient music, and writing down your long term personal goal. This may be to do with your life ambitions, or may simply be a more personal, everyday goal which is to do with finding a balanced and peaceful state of mind. You then commune with your crystal, placing it on your third eye chakra, so as to represent the connection between you, your goals, and your crystal which will help you on your way.

How do crystals heal?

People across the globe have found that the use of a crystal, in combination with meditative practices, helps in overcoming various stresses, be they large or small. If you are looking to build up your self love and increase the level of positive energy in your thinking, then introducing crystals to a meditative process could help. This process could in turn serve as an important part of a healthy regime which helps remove inner pains and anxieties from your mind.

Many indeed have found that working with crystals can be an important part of the process of dealing with something specific, such as if you are in a period of grief. As the philosophy behind crystals is all about helping connect with the energies of peace and harmony in the world, it can serve as a beneficial practice for either specific issues or as a general source of strength to bring with you into everyday life.

If you are struggling with anxiety, then this relaxing, peaceful and soothing process may become a useful source of inner calm and confidence. The benefits of crystals are just one part of your wider journey, but they may well be a very important part. Many have found that crystals in particular serve as the personal part of your self love and self care regime that will act as the quiet and stable core of all the other facets of your journey.

What kinds of crystals are there?

The world of crystals is a wonderful one which offers much variety and beauty. One crystal which it may be useful to look into first is Amethyst, especially if you are looking to help deal with anxiety, as this is said to be an extremely purifying, healing and protective crystal with powers to rid your mind of negative thoughts and foster a deep sense of spiritual wisdom.

You may also like to explore the qualities of pairs of crystals, such as rose quartz and clear quartz. Indicated symbolically by the pinkish red colour of rose quartz, this crystal is said to be connected to all things related to love. This may therefore be useful to matters related to family and relationships, but it may be just as useful for fostering a loving sense of empathy more widely.

Clear quartz is said to be a more general "master healer", helping to regulate flows of energy that will help your mind and body remain healthy. As a more general healer, it is often combined with rose quartz, as it is thought that this can enhance rose quartz's healing potential. In terms of other quartz options, you might also be interested in exploring the potential of the smoky quartz crystal stone. This is thought to help those who wish to move on from difficult experiences, or who would like to release past concerns or worrying thoughts that serve no helpful purpose.

You will find that there are crystals which many turn to for moments of transition. This includes the green fluorite crystal, which is said to aid creativity, development and renewal. Clearing negative or distortive thoughts and allowing for positive transformation, white selenite is also believed to help with positive transformation. Lepidolite is considered to be in a similar transformative territory, and so it could be introduced into your meditative routine if you are looking to gently and safely change your habits for the better. Its effects are also thought to be soothing, so that this stone will help you on your path of transformation in a calming and peaceful manner.

Clarity of thought is believed to be found in such crystals as sodalite and shungite. Black tourmaline is also used in a similar way, as it is considered to be a highly protective and purifying crystal. If you are having social anxiety and would like to help draw from calming support, then blue lace agate is also thought to be a stress relieving stone which helps remove negative energy and give you peace of mind when you need it.
