Who is Ganesh?
Ganesh also known as Ganesha or Ganapati is the son of Lord Shiva & Parvati. Ganesh is the Hindu God of New Beginnings and Remover of Obstacles, he is known for having an elephant head on a cute chubby boy like body. Lord Ganesh provides luck, prosperity, fortune and success and that's why many Hindus worship him before starting anything important.
What is the Ganesh festival?
The Ganesh festival also know as Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesh. The 10 day festival takes place on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the sixth month in the Hindu calendar (Bhadra). Bhadra falls in August/September according to the Georgian calendar.
How is the Ganesh festival celebrated?
Ganesh idols are set up on beautifully decorated raised platforms (pandals) in homes or temples, the statues are decorated with garlands, flowers and lights. The festival begins with the Pranapratishhtha, which consists of the chanting of mantras by a priest to invoke life in the idols. People celebrate the festival by singing hymns and dancing to the drumbeats. Ganesh's favourite indian sweets such as coconut rice, modaks, ladoos & more are placed in front Lord Ganesh's idol as offerings.
On the 10th day the Ganesh idols are carried to the local river in a huge procession where devotees chant Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya which means Goodbye Lord, please come back next year as the statues are where immersed into the water taking away people's worries and leaving behind blessings.
